All you need for a great wedding is a beautiful dress and a talented photographer. That’s a joke, but it’s not so far from the truth. This is perfectly captured in a famous quote by Joe Bussinka, one of the world’s best wedding photographers: “The cake will be eaten. The flowers will wilt. The dress will be packed away in a box. But the moments I capture—they’ll stay with you forever!”

And that, in my opinion, is what makes wedding photography unique.

Choosing a photographer is simple — his photos speak louder than any words.

Take a look and judge for yourself. The only thing I strongly recommend is to look not only at their best work but also at large series of photos from a single wedding. That way, you’ll be able to assess the photographer’s professional level much more objectively. After all, anyone can take a good photo when circumstances align perfectly. But very few can take a hundred good ones at every wedding. So, consistently high-quality results are the main criterion.

Be sure to pay attention to the photographer’s style. Some photographers focus more on staged photos, while others prefer candid shots that capture natural moments and genuine emotions. In the first case, be prepared to pose more for the camera; in the second, let your mood guide you.

Also, clarify exactly what you’ll receive in the end. How many photos will there be? How many of them will be edited? Will you have to pay any additional fees later on?

It’s also important how comfortable you feel around this person. You’ll be spending almost the entire day with them, so it’s best if you like them and if they can lift your spirits and help you relax in front of the camera.

Break the stereotypes

Wedding photography isn’t just about portraits of the bride and groom strolling through standard locations. A photo shoot can—and should—be an interesting and unforgettable experience. That way, you’ll get not only beautiful photos but also unforgettable memories. And the photographer should be on the same page as you—someone who will not only support you in this but also come up with their own unique and beautiful ideas for the shoot.
